The team quickly grew into a strong team in the domestic University women’s basketball. From 2005 to 2012, Huazhong University of Science and Technology won the second place in the Chinese college league four times women’s basketball. After a period of time, the team’s record declined slightly, stabilizing at the level of the national top eight. In recent years, Huazhong University of Science and Technology has a strong momentum of women’s basketball. After winning the national third place in 2019, it successively entered the top four in the country last year and this year. This time, it finally broke through history and won the Cup for the first time. Zeng Hongtao believes that Huazhong University of Science and Technology won the championship women’s basketball this time, which is a high affirmation of its perennial hard training and also demonstrates the team’s perseverance and unyielding spirit. He said that Zhai Huan, the current head coach of the team, has helped the team to achieve the success of the national runner-up many times as a member since 2006. After graduation, she once experienced in China Women’s Basketball League (WCBA), then returned to her alma mater and took over the team in a low period. Zhai Huan built a diversified tactical system on the basis of keeping the team’s original characteristics of speed, accuracy and flexibility. She focuses on using data technology to analyze players’ abilities and game content, paying attention to game details, making targeted arrangements for each game, and striving to take the initiative in the game. Continuous high-quality training is also a key for the team of Huazhong University of Science and technology to break through the bottleneck. Zeng Hongtao told the reporter that on the road of pursuing the Championship, the coaching staff had only 7 days off 365 days a year, while the team members had more than 1600 hours of training in the whole year on the premise of ensuring their studies. After the daily training, the coach will accompany the team members for additional individual training. Zeng Hongtao pointed out: “Such diligent training makes the team have a good physical reserve and enables us to efficiently implement the tactical deployment of the coach in high-intensity competitions. Every team member has an endless desire for the champion.” He also mentioned that from the data point of view, the goal attempts of Huazhong University of Science and technology often surpasses the opponents, which reflects the initiative and aggressiveness of the team. In addition, Chen Yuzhen, Huo Juntong, Liu Bei and other players were selected into the three-person Basketball Women’s national training team, among which Chen Yuzhen also won the third place in the three-person basketball Asian Cup in April this year, the experience of the national character team has helped these women’s basketball core players of HKUST enhance their confidence. On the other hand, Huazhong University of Science and Technology reached strategic cooperation with Hubei sports bureau women’s basketball. The team represented Hubei team to participate in the National Games, while Hubei sports bureau gave support in all aspects according to the needs of the team, and the school also targeted to ensure the diet of athletes. Zeng Hongtao said that in recent years, the team has entered a virtuous circle. After graduation, some players entered WCBA and even the national training team, and some entered colleges and universities as physical education teachers or coaches.
