NBA announced today that the Memphis Grizzlies defender Jia Morant was punished for 25 games with no pay.
On May 13, Morant posed in the car with a gun in a live broadcast. Less than two months ago, he was suspended for eight games because he broadcast a video live at a nightclub in Denver on March 4. In the video, he was also carrying a gun when he was drunk.
An investigation by the league office found that on May 13, Morante and several others showed a gun in the car deliberately and conspicuously when they left a social gathering in Memphis. Morant was still waving guns when he knew he was recorded and was broadcast live. He had previously declared to the alliance and the public that he would not repeat his previous disciplinary actions.
On May 16, Morant issued a statement to take full responsibility for his actions. Morant’s ban starts immediately and will last until the first 25 games of the NBA regular season from 2023 to 24. He will also be required to meet certain conditions before re-participating in the game, and are not eligible to participate in any public league or training activities, including preseason.
NBA President Xiao Hua said: “Morant’s use of guns on social media again is shocking and worrying, because his similar behavior in March has been banned. Under such circumstances, we think it is appropriate to ban 25 games. The alliance has zero tolerance for such reckless behavior.”
“Before he returns to the stadium, he will be required to formulate and implement a plan with the Alliance to directly solve the situation that led him to repeat this destructive behavior.”
