Liu Tie was born in ulanhaote, Inner Mongolia Hinggan League, in June 1971. He was selected into the national men’s basketball team during the player period. He once played for the Air Force team, Shandong team and Foshan team, and was selected into the CBA All-Star team five times. During the coaching period, he served as the head coach of Tianjin team and Nanjing Tongxi team.
